I think the quality of a National Park experience can be improved if we do not try to hand the visitor his recreation on a platter, but let him make at least a little exertion to find it…..and the resulting deeper satisfaction that comes from some form of personal achievement……….Olaus Murie
Although Olaus was talking about discontinuing feeding bears along the roadside and making it more difficult for visitors to see bears, I think the quote applies to the second hike I did in the summer of 2006. Ballpark Frank and I hiked from the Cascade picnic area to the Blacktail ponds over Observation Peak and Cook Peak. We definitely had to make “at least a little exertion.” It was far and away the most difficult hike of my summer but also the most rewarding. The picture is from the top of Cook Peak.
