Out to Lamar as early as we weary travelers can make it. From one of the first pullouts in Lamar, far off across the river is an old elk carcass with the usual crowd of ravens and a coyote or two. Someone with big glass points out a distant wolf on the move, our only sighting on this trip. The bare snag with osprey nest has two on it. They flee before I can photograph them. And of course, there are lots and lots of bison. Big surprise! About one in five calves is bright orange. Something about last fall’s rut? Hope Autumn is mild, otherwise, do they have a chance of seeing Spring?
First stop, Trout Lake. It’s pristine! There are one or two frustrated fishermen around, but the osprey isn’t around today. No orchids, no otters. There are, however, a few good-sized trout visible in the clear water.
